Drew Montgomery writes the following about The Giver :
The Giver is about a utopian society which has done away with the frills of life- color, snow, music, etc. The story centers on Jonas, an 11-year old at the beginning of the book, who is about to get an Assignment for his life. Assignments are basically jobs that are given to the members of the community at age 12. Jonas is apprehensive of his Assignment- because unlike some children, he has no idea what his Assignment will be. He is shocked when he is chosen to become Receiver, taught by the mystical Giver himself. Jonas slowly discovers the rwal joys of life...and the pain of it. A startling realization makes him decide to change the commmunity- he will expose them to reality. This book was really good but kind of confusing. Confusing in that the people in this society believe mundane details in our life, to be absurd and out of question. Very good book, though you may end up with more questions than the ones with which you started.
