Asher Soto writes the following about The Giver :

I think the ending was weak (but the beginning was pretty uplifting). It should get an 8 because it is a good book and an uplifting beginning, but the author(Lois Lowry) was to dependent on someone else to make their own next chapter and send it in, so she would have a better idea for another book with a continuing chapter(a sequel). So that is why I didn't like the ending, only the beginning.(!)
