christine e writes the following about The Giver :
This is a fasinating story because of how Lois Lowry came up with the idea of a "utpoian society" with a reciever of memory who holds all the memories of the past. I enjoyed the story very much and how it is a cliff hanger. It is about a twelve year old boy name Jonas who later is selected to become the reciever of memory (the highest honor possible)and will be tought by the giver about colour, war, pain, felings, and much much more which no one else in his community knows about. After about a year The Giver realizes that there must be some changes in the community so Jonas and the Giver have a plan that Jonas escapes and leaves all the memories to the community so there wouldn't be sameness. There are some parts of this book that really surprised me such as the fact that when people are realesed, they are really being killed and that the fact that Rosemary is the Giver's daughter. I liked the whole entire book except for the ending because it leaves us with so many questions and mysteries. I gave the illustrations an 8 because there aren't many illustrtations to judge and the front cover isn't really addicting. In conclusion, i think that anyone who doesnt read this book is missing out on a great story.
