"Jonas," she said, speaking not to him alone, but to the entire community of which he was a part, "you will be trained to be our next Reciever of Memory. We thank you for your childhood." That is my favorite line on THE GIVER, wrote by Lois Lowery. This is a wonderful fantasy, life-related book.
The Giver is about a boy named Jonas and a little of his life. His world is perfect, everybody is kind and respectful to anyone around them. In addition, everybody has a specific job that they must do, and they recieve them at the age of twelve. Jonas is just about to turn twelve and is getting excited about his job. Then, there it is, the Ceremony of Twelve. Jonas recieves a job that is RARELY ever recived,The Reciever of Memory. This job is of high importance (the community turns to him for answers for problems) and is the time where the Reciver recieves the feeling of pain, which has never been felt before. Jonas recieves very special training from the past Reciever, who will be known as, The Giver. The Giver transfers memories from him to the Reciever, who will keep them, until a new Reciever is chosen. The memories Jonas recieves are painful and enjoyable and has to keep them until the new Reciever is chosen. Then Jonas makes a dangerous move, he wants to leave the city and look for Elsewhere, the forbidden city anyone can see, or go to. He has to go with a baby that will be killed unless he brings him. So because of careness, Jonas brings him along.
I enjoyed the story very much. It like the setting of the story and the way events are done. I would recommened this book to anyone that enjoys fantasy, and life-like stories. THE GIVER has recieved many awards, including the Newbery medal, for its wonderful story. The New York Times gives it "A powerful and provocative novel".
