Mr. Watkins writes the following about The Giver :

Jonas lives in a perfect community...or so it seems. An eerie sense of unrest lies beneath the surface. What does it mean when an elderly person is "released" to go Elsewhere? And where is that? The book's plot is captivating and a bit futuristic without any of the typical science fiction gadgets. The ending is unpredictable, but leaves many of the reader's questions unanswered.
