Jessica Tarantino- Copiague Middle Schoo writes the following about The Giver :
In the story "THE GIVER", a young boy named Jonas lives in a community where everything is very organized and strict. The philosophy that his community has is that there is no individuality, everyone is the same and no mirrors are needed to see the personal appearance of outer beauty. At his Ceremony Of Twelve, where each 12 year old child is given a job that the commuinty believes is fit for the individual. Jonas is given what is believed to be the most impotant job in the whole community. In his training, Jonas discovers that many things that happen outside of their community, is very different from that of other community. Once you are are born into the community, you will never leave it, unless told to. You are obligated to be committed to your given job and family. Jonas is given the task of being the new Reciever of the community. His training is secret, and a one on one training that is confidential to only the reciver, and the giver (the trainer). Along the way, jonas realizes that he wants to know what is beyond the community, and discover new things, so he decides to leave the community. In doing so, he takes one of the babies who was scheduled to be executed. He takes him with him on his journey, and together they live and discover the rest of the world.
