Rudy Aguilar writes the following about The Giver :
Jonas is an eleven, an annual step in this community towards adulthood. It takes you through his becoming a twelve, and all that is expected of him. How they are "assigned jobs," which a Committee of Elders decides for them. It describes how everything in this society is decided for them, everything is the same. the weather is climate controlled for "sameness". They are mindless followers who have no control over their lives.
Jonas gets "selected" to be the new "Receiver of Memory," a great honor. He sees how things were long ago, and sees colors for the first time, feels feelings, experiences love, and warmth and pain. He doesn't like the way things are being controlled! He wants to make choices, good or bad!
