Joe Dobbs writes the following about The Giver :

The Giver is a novel about interdependence. The main character is a boy named Jonas, who is about to become a 12. He lives in a seemingly perfect community. When a child becomes a 12 in the community Jonas lives in, they are given an Assignment, or job. Most of the childeren in the Community already have an idea on what their Assignment will be, but not Jonas. Lois Lowry takes your on a vigourous journey through this book as Jonas learns more and more about his "perfect" community. I'm sure that anyone who loves adventure will love the book The Giver.
