My 10 year old daughter is reading this book in 5th grade. I decided to read the book after she finished it. I was horrified to read that childrren were bathing "old" people, that to release meant to die. I did not appreciate the fact that they went into detail about how they released a newborn baby (sticking a needle in the soft spot of a baby's head), or that an eleven year old girl (the previous receiver of memory) committed suicide, or that because a child is cranky and won't sleep through the night it will be killed. The only positive thing I could see from the book was that it could teach children to stand up for what they believe, like Jonas did. He did not agree with the way the community he lived in was right.
This is not an appropriate book for 10 years old, if any age it would be the latter years of middle school into high school.
Had I known what the book was about and it's content, I would have immediately gone to her teacher to protest their reading this book in class.
Don't waste your time!
