A boy is unexpectedly dropped into Canada's rugged north with only a hatchet and his will to survive. This is the basic outline for one of the greatest stories ever written for young readers interested in survival fiction because it portrays exactly what it would be like to have to fend for yourself alone in the woods. The story begins with a personal tragedy of a divorce in the family and a father and son attempting to reunite in distant Canada. The pilot of a bush plane bringing Danny, our hero, to his father's remote work site suffers a massive heart attack and dies. Danny somehow manages to control the plane for many hours before it crashes into a northern lake. In the aftermath of the crash, a dazed and confused boy must face a grim reality: he's totally alone and no one knows he's alive. The real drama now begins.
If this simple summary captures your imagination, you will not be disappointed when you read the rest of this thrilling tale. I was on the edge of my seat for so much of this book that I wore out the seat cushion! Danny was amazingly resourceful in order to survive and had to overcome so many personal and physical challenges that I was exhausted when I finally put the book down. The conclusion was not your typical Hollywood style ending where everything turns out okay and all of the problems are solved. That would be too easy for Gary Paulson, an expert in survival techniques and not an author who writes the same old thing every time. You will absolutely love the entire book from beginning to surprise ending.
