Imagine living in a society where almost everything is the same, almost all difficult choices are made for you, and true feelings are rare. This is the society that Lois Lowry created in her book, The Giver. Lowry created a Utopian society to illustrate a society without choices or feelings. I believe that many people feel that our world would be better without painful memories and feelings or difficult choices. After reading this book, in which Lowry shows how perfection in a society can never be achieved, you have to agree that The Community would not be an ideal place to live.
The main character of The Giver is Jonas. Jonas is transformed from a boy with a robotic-like mindset into a young adult with eyes open to our world. Jonas is changed when he starts recieving training from The Giver, an elderly man who contains the past's memories of pain and love. I believe that the story's only major weak point is its ending. I was personally confused by the ending, and I expected and hoped that Jonas would have gotten to see The Giver in Elsewhere. I believe that preteens/teens ten to fourteen of age would enjoy this book. I believe that this is a good book, despite some of its weaknesses, and that it will give you something to ponder!
