GaudlipB writes the following about The Giver :
The Giver is a science fiction story based upon a utopian society. I thought this book was a very meticulously and well thought out story that depicts how imperfect a utopian society is. This is a bit of a contradiction. However, the only people who know this to be true in the society are forbidden to tell. It is easy to say that the government that governs in this utopia has the feel of communism, in the essence that everything is controlled and regulated by the government. There is not, however, a clear leader, but a council with a head elder who is called upon for advice. This book is definitely different from its predecessors 1984, Brave New World, We, or Utopia. It is more focused on the storyline than the general concept of a Utopian world. Although I enjoyed the book, I do not believe that the ending was powerful enough. The ending seemed to be too abrupt and fast and left us with several major questions.
