We gave this book a 9.8 rating, because we both greatly enjoyed it. The original idea and great description keep us in suspense throughout the book.
This book was about a boy named Jonas; He is different from all of the other children in the community. He has the ability to see beyond- to see color. He is worried of what assignment he will receive for the rest of his life. He lives in a community were most of their decisions are made for them. When the time comes to receive his job at the ceremony of the 12’s, Jonas is assigned to be the Receiver Of Memory. In his training he receives memories of amazing things he has never seen, such as: Snow, Sunshine, Warfare, Oceans… He sees particular memories of color when throwing an apple to his best friend Asher, and his friend Fiona. He also watches a release of a child, which he thinks is leaving the community, but is really death for them. Towards the end of the book Jonas and his trainer think of a plan for him to escape from the community at dawn.
When the time comes for the plan to occur Jonas decides to take along a baby named Gabriel which was going to be released the very next day, and has the capability to receive memories like Jonas. On the run, they encounter search planes but are able to escape them using a memory of coolness. The book ended when they got to the top of the snowey hill seeing a beautiful city: Jonas’s destination.
