B.j. Potter writes the following about The Outsiders :

This book is for anyone who likes action and drama. It is basicly about a 13 or 14 year old who is in a gang called "the greasers". A boy and his friend run away because the boy's friend stabbed a soc. The "soc's" are the greasers rival gang. So the two boy's run away until the story about the stabing is over. The boy who stabbed the soc eventually dies because of a wooden beam that was on fire fell on him. Then they become hero's for saving kid's from a burning church, so the dead boy died as a hero.
