The book THE WHITE MERCEDES by Phillip Pullman has very few strengths, in my opinion. The characters are very well-developed. Jenny is the only character that you do not find out everything about her past (all of the rest are simply told to you, but you mainly have to guess about what happened to Jenny when she was little). The plot is okay, but it is called a mystery and yet it has no mystery in it. At the beginning of the book, it says that Chris met the girl he was going to kill at the ball, and yet Chris does not kill anyone in the book. The setting is described very well, since Phillip Pullman grew up in Oxford. He was able to use his experiences in order to write the book. In conclusion, the only things that Phillip Pullman is able to even start boast about in this book are the characters, the plot, and the setting.
Although he is not anywhere near good at writing mysteries, Phillip Pullman has written a very good fantasytrilogy called HIS DARK MATERIALS. (Just in case you're interested)
