In the book The Outsiders, the theme understanding and kindness can overcome prejudice is expressed. For instance, when Ponyboy first talked to Cherry, he thought of the Socs as rude and cruel to the Greasers so he didn't like them much. Then, after being around her more and more she opened up to him and was really nice and understanding of Pony's problems. Cherry convinced him that the Socs were not any different then the Greasers. They all had the same problems, like friends and family and they were not as bad as everyone thought they were. The Socs were special in their own way just like anyone else. Ponyboy realized that maybe Greasers and Socs could one day be friends.
I think this book was a very good learning experience for me and could be for you. It taught me about differences between people and how they can become friends dispite how different they are. If you decide to read this book I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
