I feel that the novel The Outsiders is a great book for all ages. The characters are very real and allow the reader to image themselves as the characters and in the same situations. For example, most people have been in a situation where they are not comfortable being alone and someone comes up behind them that they don't want to be there. This happens when Ponyboy is walking home and the Socs circle him and jump him. The novel is also set in a city where there is a rich side and a poor side. All readers have experienced this at sometime in their lives whether in person or on the news. Also, this novel deals with real issues that most kids face today. For example, prejudice, loneliness, and family misunderstandings come to mind. Prejudice is shown when the Greasers and the Socs are judged by what they wear and what they say. Loneliness and misunderstanding is through out the novel in very subtle ways. I would recommend this book to all high school students because it deals with real issues and how real people deal with them.
